Overtourism: Where to Visit Instead

As the world becomes more globalized and travel is in reach for more and more people, some famous destinations are receiving more tourism than they can handle. If you’re looking for some solid alternatives to fan favorite locations, then these eight ideas will give you great inspiration for your next trip.

Amsterdam — The Hague

These days Amsterdam receives more than 17 million tourists a year — this is to a city with a population of just over 820,000. Get away from the tourists and instead visit The Hague, a city less than an hour away. With canals and gorgeous Dutch architecture, The Hague is essentially a mini Amsterdam and is also the seat of government in the Netherlands.

Dubrovnik — Tel Aviv

Dubrovnik, Croatia is known for its beautiful architecture and stunning beaches, but overtourism is taking its toll on the city and making it less pleasant to visit. Instead, turn to Tel Aviv, Israel. With a thriving beach scene, similar climate and tons of history, it’s the perfect substitute.

Venice — Bassano del Grappa

Gondolas may initially seem romantic, but when you begin crashing into others in the canals due to overtourism, it may be time to consider an alternative. The city of Bassano del Grappa is also in Italy and is a charming, historic town on the River Brenta. Trade overstuffed canals for quiet alleys but keep gelato and wine — a win-win.

Rome — Colmar

Like Venice, Rome is also seeing an influx of tourists, causing the city to make new laws to protect their heritage. Instead, head to Colmar, France and experience unrivaled charm and equally good wine.

Machu Picchu — Petra

If it’s magnificent historic relics you’re looking for, trade the overcrowded Machu Picchu Inca ruins in Peru for the lesser known ancient city of Petra in Jordan.

Reykjavik — Faroe Islands

For such a tiny country, Iceland, specifically the main city of Reykjavik, is experiencing high volumes of tourism and it’s becoming harder to retain the starkness that Iceland has become known for. Instead, head to the Faroe Islands — a self-governing archipelago of Denmark. With similar dramatic landscapes, sparse populations and the always adorable puffins, it makes for a perfect substitute.

Barcelona — Cartagena

Ranked in the top five most visited cities in Europe, Barcelona, Spain is becoming increasingly more crowded and difficult to enjoy. Instead, head to Cartagena, Colombia and experience a similar hyped-up beach scene, similar architecture and brightly colored buildings.

Paris — Mostar

The City of Love may seem like a dream destination, but with more 40 million tourists annually, you may want to search for old-school romance elsewhere. Instead of Paris, head to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. No need to give up your fairytale vacation in this cobblestoned, historic city.
